So-called presidential elections in Belarus ‘set to be a sham’, says PACE General Rapporteur Petru

Ahead of the so-called presidential elections set to take place in Belarus on 26 January 2025, PACE General Rapporteur Ryszard Petru (ALDE, Poland) has issued a statement condemning the poll as a “sham election” and highlighting the widespread repression of political dissent, including the detention of 1,200 political prisoners.

ALDE group members have supported a proposal by Ryszard Petru to hold an urgent debate on the need for free and fair elections in Belarus.

ALDE-PACE looks forward to meeting with the delegation of Belarusian democratic forces, who will participate in PACE’s work starting with the January 2025 session.
