Pressure against member of the Parliamentary Assembly of the Council of Europe Mr Martin Poliačik

Statement issued by ALDE-PACE President Rik Daems:

28.06.2019

Pressure against member of the Parliamentary Assembly of the Council of Europe Mr Martin Poliačik (Progressive Slovakia)

It is with grave concern that we learned about the statement issued on Wednesday 26 June by the President of the Slovak delegation to the Parliamentary Assembly of the Council of Europe and the Speaker of the National Council of the Slovak Republic concerning our fellow ALDE colleague from Progressive Slovakia Mr Martin Poliačik MP.

ALDE expresses dismay at what seems to be an act of pressure and reprisal for the expression of personal political views by a Member of Parliament. This goes against the rules, the spirit and the values of a pluralist democracy. It also undermines the freedom of political expression.

We call on our colleagues in the Slovak parliament to refrain from any kind of pressure on Mr Poliačik.

In the following days the President of the Parliamentary Assembly will address a letter to the Speaker of the Slovak Parliament.
