Pre-electoral visit to North Macedonia

A delegation of the Parliamentary Assembly of the Council of Europe (PACE), led by Alfred Heer (ALDE, Switzerland), concluded its pre-electoral visit to North Macedonia (25-28 March 2024). The observers noted that the period leading up to the elections has been stable, and elections were expected to meet democratic standards. However, the delegation highlighted that several long-standing ODIHR recommendations remain unaddressed, including the harmonisation of the Electoral Code, clarification of tenure and appointment procedures for State Election Commissioners, and the provision of effective remedies for electoral disputes.

The elections in North Macedonia are observed within the framework of PACE’s post-monitoring dialogue with the country. A full-fledged PACE delegation of 22 members will travel to North Macedonia to observe the vote on 24 April and 8 May 2024. PACE observers will work alongside ODIHR, OSCE PA and the European Parliament within the framework of an International Election Observation Mission.
