Poisoning of Russian opposition leader Alexei Navalny

On behalf of the ALDE group in the Parliamentary Assembly of the Council of Europe, its President Jacques Maire made the following statement:

“The German Government has officially declared that it had “unequivocal proof” that Russian opposition leader Alexei Navalny had been poisoned with a Novichok-type nerve agent. The ALDE group expresses its strongest indignation and resolutely condemns yet another life-threatening attack on a major political opponent in Russia.

The Council of Europe and its Parliamentary Assembly have the obligation to react immediately, to demand an impartial and thorough investigation and to use all means at their disposal to shed light on this crime. Our organisation has a proven record of providing a framework for international investigation into politically sensitive crimes.

On behalf of the ALDE Group, I will urgently raise this situation with the leadership of the Parliamentary Assembly, and I have asked for an extraordinary meeting of the Committee on Political Affairs and Democracy.”
