On 8 July 2024, ALDE-PACE leader Iulian Bulai made the following statement:
“On Thursday, 4 July, imprisoned Russian opposition politician Vladimir Kara-Murza was transferred to a prison hospital.
Vladimir’s health has been deteriorating for months, and his current condition of polyneuropathy, resulting from two poisoning attempts, is incompatible with a prison term. Instead of releasing him, however, he has been placed in a prison hospital and is effectively incommunicado. His lawyers and family are not allowed to visit him.
In these dark times, we are also thinking about Vladimir’s family and we admire the relentless fight of Yevgenia Kara-Murza for the release of her husband.
We continue to draw attention to the ongoing crackdown on dissent in Russia. Prominent opposition activists, human rights defenders, and ordinary Russians voicing criticism and rejecting Russia’s war of aggression against Ukraine are being sentenced to severe prison terms. We call for the release of all political prisoners held by Russia. The lives of many, including Vladimir Kara-Murza, are in danger.”
