During the upcoming PACE session, the ALDE Group will hold three meetings and a roundtable discussion. The Bureau of the Group will meet on Sunday, 28 September, to prepare for the week.
This week, our work will focus on the following topics:
Democracy, rule of law and human rights in member states
We continue to discuss and draw attention to the democratic backsliding in several Council of Europe member states, with particular attention to recent developments in Georgia, Serbia, and Slovakia. Safeguarding democracy, the rule of law, and human rights remains at the core of our mission.
Liberation of Ukrainian civilians, children, and prisoners of war
We shall receive a group of recently liberated Ukrainian journalists — Maksym Butkevych, Vladyslav Yesypenko, and Dmytro Khyliuk. We will also exchange views with Thórdís Gylfadóttir, Special Envoy of the Council of Europe Secretary General on Ukrainian children.
Justice and accountability for the war of aggression against Ukraine
We continue to advance efforts toward establishing a Special Tribunal on the Crime of Aggression and ensuring that the International Claims Commission becomes fully operational. These mechanisms are essential to delivering justice and reparations to victims of Russia’s war of aggression against Ukraine.
Our commitment remains clear: to defend democracy, protect human rights, and secure justice for victims of aggression.
On Thursday, 2 October, together with the International Federation of Liberal Youth (IFLRY), we will address the crucial topic of supporting youth participation through mental health-aware policymaking. This initiative underlines our commitment to empowering young people and ensuring their voices are heard in shaping inclusive, sustainable policies.
