ALDE-PACE to attend PACE meetings in Vilnius

On 23-24 May, ALDE-PACE members will attend the meetings of the Bureau and Standing Committee in Vilnius as Lithuania will be holding the rotating Presidency of the Council of Europe’s Committee of Ministers for the next six months.

An important agenda awaits us in Vilnius. The Bureau of the Assembly will interview the candidates for the Secretary General of the Council of Europe ahead of the elections to be held at the June session. Three candidates have been shortlisted by the Committee of Ministers: two socialists, Alain Berset (Switzerland) and Indrek Saar (Estonia), and a liberal, Didier Reynders (Belgium).

ALDE-PACE leader Iulian Bulai has supported holding a special debate on the situation in Georgia in the aftermath of the adoption of the controversial “foreign agents” law, which has now been vetoed by President Zurabishvili and triggered mass protests on the streets of Tbilisi, involving reported police violence.

We also look forward to the exchange of views with Lithuanian Foreign Minister Gabrielius Landsbergis and the hearing on “Sanctions against the Russian Federation and companies assisting with evasion” to discuss how to counteract loopholes allowing Russia to circumvent the international sanctions system.

Livestream Friday 24 May 2024 from 9:30 to 12:45 and from 14:30 to 16:00 (EEST – Vilnius time)
