ALDE-PACE meets in Strasbourg

The ALDE group in Parliamentary Assembly of the Council of Europe (PACE) is set for a busy session ahead, focusing on advancing democratic values and human rights across Europe. A highlight of the autumn session of PACE, to be held from 30 September to 4 October 2024 in Strasbourg, will be the award ceremony for the 2024 Václav Havel Human Rights Prize, which honours exceptional human rights defenders. The laureate will be selected from three shortlisted candidates, with a special statement from the 2022 prize winner, Vladimir Kara-Murza, who was recently released from detention in Russia.

Other highlights include debates on the propaganda and freedom of information in Europe, the Holodomor’s 90th anniversary, Europe’s approach to migrant smuggling and missing persons, and the impact on human rights created by the detention of Julian Assange. The new Secretary General of the Council of Europe Alain Berset, Lithuanian Foreign Minister Gabrielius Landsbergis, and Foreign Minister of North Macedonia Timcho Mucunski will address the Assembly. Further debates will tackle the situation in Iran, LGBTQ+ rights, human rights aspects of the metaverse, and the human right to food.

During its group meetings, ALDE-PACE will also meet with Vladimir Kara-Murza to discuss the situation in Russia. Additionally, together with Liberal International colleagues Astrid Thors, Vice-President, and William Townsend, Secretary General, we will be welcoming Ana Maria Sosa, the daughter of María Corina Machado, a prominent Venezuelan opposition leader shortlisted for the 2024 Vaclav Havel Prize, to discuss the challenges facing democracy in Venezuela. These meetings underscore the ALDE group’s commitment to supporting human rights and democratic resilience in the face of authoritarianism.
