The system of the European Convention of Human Rights is the most important human rights achievement on the European continent. The duty of all state-parties and political leaders is to safeguard and consolidate this system. The decisions of the European Court of Human Rights must be fully implemented.
On Tuesday 16 February 2021, having regard to the nature and extent of risk to the applicant’s life the Court indicated an interim measure under its Rule 39 in favour of Alexei Navalny and requested his immediate release.
ALDE-PACE is alarmed by the statements of Russian high officials, including Minister of Justice Konstantin Chuychenko and Director of the Information and Press Department of the Russian MFA Maria Zakharova, that Russia would not abide by this decision.
We call on the Russian authorities to comply without delay and to release Mr Navalny. This is clearly an obligation of the Russian Federation under the European Convention of Human Rights.
