ALDE members take part in Standing Committee Meeting

The “enlarged” Standing Committee of the Parliamentary Assembly of the Council of Europe is meeting in a virtual format on 12-13 and 22-23 October. This time the Assembly will focus on political and human rights consequences of the Covid-19 pandemic and the impact from the development of artificial intelligence. Several other topics, including the human rights situation in Turkey and the armed conflict between Armenia and Azerbaijan. You can follow the sitting here.

ALDE members are scheduled to present the following reports:

Olivier Beht: The brain-computer interface: new rights or new threats to fundamental freedoms?

Roland Rino Büchel: Time to act: Europe’s political response to fighting the manipulation of sports competitions

Michal Aastrup Jensen: Armed conflict between Armenia and Azerbaijan, failure of peaceful conflict resolution and a risk to regional stability (opening speech)

Petra Stienen: Upholding human rights in times of crisis and pandemics: gender, equality and non-discrimination & The gender dimension of foreign policy

The new format of the meeting has allowed ALDE to appoint speakers in most of the debates. Particular welcome to Fiona O’Loughlin (Ireland, delegation Chair) and Damien Cottier (Switzerland) who address the Assembly for the first time. List of appointed speakers for download.
