ALDE-PACE will meet in Strasbourg on 24-28 June 2024. We will address critical issues such as the ongoing war in Ukraine and accountability of Russia. Several important reports will be presented by ALDE colleagues, including on the erasure of cultural identity in Ukraine and asylum procedures in the Council of Europe’s member states. We will meet with the former Russian Prime Minister Mikhail Kasyanov who will provide insights into Russia’s current political landscape and its implications for security and stability in Europe. We also look forward to a fruitful discussion with ALDE Party Co-Presidents Ilhan Kyuchyuk and Timmy Dooley.

Ahead of the elections of the next Secretary General of the Council of Europe to be held on Tuesday 25 June 2024, ALDE-PACE will meet again with the three candidates running for the post: a liberal candidate Didier Reynders and two socialist candidates Indrek Saar, Estonia, and Alain Berset, Switzerland. The choice to be made by the Parliamentary Assembly will shape the organisation’s future.

Another key focus this week for us is the issue of Ukrainian civilians deported and/or illegally detained in Russia. We will discuss the situation with Dmytro Lubinets, the Ukrainian Parliament Commissioner for Human Rights. Our side event on Wednesday 26 June from 1 to 2 pm “Journalists matter: a call to free Ukrainian journalists held in captivity by the Russian Federation” will highlight the plight of Ukrainian journalists and underscore the need for international solidarity and action.
